being green

We strive to limit our environmental footprint and encourage all of our guests to do the same. The Haus on Mirror Lake, Lake Placid’s only main street vacation rental, has been awarded the 4 Green Eco-Leaf rating by iStayGreen.org since2009 for our renovations and operational practices.

SUSTAINABLE TOURISM:

Guests of The Haus are given the option of helping us stay green with housekeeping available upon request and in-room recycling. Further efficiencies are obtained with programmed thermostats for all zones throughout the building.

We ask our guests to observe eco-friendly habits such as:

• Help us recycle by rinsing/recycling clear jars, bottles and aluminum cans
• Recycle Plastics #1 & #2 only! Other numbers will force the rejection of our other properly recycled plastics. Please be sure of #1& #2 ONLY!
• Alerting our staff you will not need a
sheet change saves water and energy.
• Turning off the lights when you leave
your suite
• Turning off the A/C when you leave
your suite
• Turning off the water while brushing
your teeth
• Turning down heat or using our
programmed thermostats.
• Reusing your towels unless a change is needed
• Using our ceiling fans rather than A/C

Encouraging mass transit, we offer guests free parking for the duration of their stay and provide schedules for the ski shuttle and free trolley service that runs past our building. Bicycles and bicycles rentals are all welcome at The Haus too.

With no black out periods, we encourage guests to travel here in hybrid vehicles at any time of the year. Finally our reservation process can be conducted using but 1 sheet of paper.

OPERATIONS:
Whenever possible we use environmentally friendly products. Our staff are trained to recycle whatever disposable items guests set aside while limiting use of stronger household cleaners. We take a holistic approach to domestic chores minimizing electrical and product consumption. Our heat and electricity are provided by the hydroelectric plant at Niagara Falls.

PROPERTY DEVELOPMENT:
Décor at the Haus was provided in large part by fair trade artisans and environmentally conscious manufacturers. We personally refurbished most of the building ourselves over the past three years which, though taking longer, substantially reduced our carbon footprint during construction. Whenever possible, we reused building timbers during renovation and over 96% of all plumbing, windows and electrical wiring were recycled locally.

New, low E, foam filled, thermal pane windows were installed in all our vacation rental apartments allowing us to fill old ballast channels with foam further improving energy efficiency. We are proud that all of our large appliances are Energy Star rated and 87% of lighting fixtures use compact fluorescent or LED bulbs.
